What the Computer Club Offers

The computer club at Newton Seniors Centre offers a wide variety of educational and social opportunities and has a deadecated instruction room with 12 computer stations using Windows 11 – as well as a dozen Chromebook laptops with touch screens and convertable into a tablet.

Monday Club Meetings (1:00 p.m.- 3:00 p.m.)

The club starts a ‘new year’ in September wherein each week, the club holds a meeting where the members can participate in open discussions, mini workshops, Question and Answer sessions and more. The club also invites both in-house and guest lecturers to present to members a variety of computer related topics. We invite you to attend up to three meetings prior to joining the club. Our Annual Genaral Meeting is held in early June with executive elections and a closeout BBQ in mid-June. No activites happen over the summer.

Monday meetings are held at the Newton Seniors Centre, 13775 – 70 Ave., Surrey, BC.

The Cloverdale Computer Club meets in their Recreation Center Thursdays from 10 AM to noon. They have an interesting web site, see: tech-chat.ca

Currently we offer a weekly drop-in session where members can get help for their unique computer problem. Imagine… almost a private lesson ! Come in and see if you can stump our volunteers! You must be a member of the computer club to use this service with a Surrey Recreation Card.

Computer Maintenance (a minimum intermediate skill level is required please)

Here is a win-win… the club is always in need of members to help maintain the computer lab. You are guaranteed to expand your computer knowledge in a very social setting. Ask any club volunteer for information.

Ever thought of volunteering for the club?

There are many jobs that need doing to make the club run smoothly.

For many of the tasks…no computer skills are required at all. Perfect for newer computer users!

The education committee are always on the lookout for instructors to teach classes as well as class helpers. The club also needs people who would be willing to give a talk on a subject at the Monday meetings.

Whether you can lend a few hours helping out at the Christmas party, keeping the bulletin board updated, assisting in the drop-in help sessions on Mondays… the club needs your help ! If you have the time, contact us or any of the volunteers listed on the club volunteers page.

The more hands helping out, the better our club will be !

In 1993, with assistance from the B.C.Tel Pioneers and a grant from the New Horizons, the club was born. The first instructors were volunteers from B.C. Tel Pioneers. These lessons were held in the very small room near the auditorium door.

Graduates from those early classes eventually took over the teaching and have been joined by many others, who volunteer their time to share their knowledge of the computer.

As the membership in the computer club grew, a permanent classroom was established, and the meetings were moved to the large activity room.

In the beginning there were only a handful of “graduates” from the one course (M.S. Works), but it was a beginning. Since then the membership has grown to well over one hundred.

We believe one reason for our success, is the lack of formality. As “retired” persons, it was felt we should not be required to adhere to too much to RULE, since it is primarily for fun and sociability as well as learning.

Through the revenue generated by the lessons and a couple of grants from the rotary club the older computers have been replaced…updated when necessary to their present level. From the same sources, funds have been found to purchase a SCANNER, a CD WRITER, A MULTI MEDIA PROJECTOR (which allows us to project computer images onto a twelve foot screen) and other hardware that gives a variety of options for those persons who like to use more sophisticated equipment.
